Students at Hallettsville Junior High School Become Energy-Wise with PowerHouse
Sixty-three students in Brian Leist’s science class recently participated in the PowerHouse™ energy investigation sponsored by the City of Hallettsville, Fayette Electric Cooperative (FEC), San Bernard Electric Cooperative (SBEC), and the Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative (GVEC). The program teaches students about electricity production, its impact on the environment, and the potential savings on utility bills from energy-wise practices at home. “The PowerHouse program is extremely helpful in making my students realize how much electricity they use and how much they can save by making a few small adjustments,” said Leist. Through PowerHouse, students learned how their personal behaviors affect energy use in their homes. Using a walk-through guide, students investigated and recorded their households’ energy-using habits. The data they collected was entered into a computer program that determined each family’s impact on the environment and various natural resources. Students received personalized reports of their homes’ energy use and practical solutions for making simple changes that can help their families save money on utility bills. “At a time when families are tightening their household budgets, PowerHouse is teaching students and their families that simple changes – like using compact fluorescent lighting and changing thermostats to energy-efficient settings – can help save on their utility bills,” said Catherine Poppe of FEC. During the 2009-2010 school year, more than 7,100 students learned how to use less energy and save natural resources, thanks to PowerHouse presentations in 60 schools with 29 utility sponsors. LCRA developed the program and offers it to its wholesale electric customers.
